RE:Servidor para progress
Yo utilizo Progress 9.1D en Red Hat 8 y la verdad que anda sin ningun tipo de problemas.
Lo he probado tambien en Red Hat 7.3 sin problemas.
Como te decian en otra respuesta necesitas conseguir Progress para Linux.
Y para instalarlo tenes que instalar el JDK (v1.3.1) y el JRE (v1.3.1). (Ambos los podes bajar de la pagina de SUN)
Para los clientes podes usar windows o Linux y conectarlos al servidor via SSH o Telnet. (Para conectarlos en windows podes usar el cliente PUTTY que soporta SSH y Telnet y es libre)
En el servidor deberias definir los usuarios (usuarios del SO) y en el .bash_profile de cada usuario deberias agregar los comandos para que ingrese a la bd (ej: mpro /dir/bd -d dmy.....) seguido de un exit para que cuando salgan no les de shell en el linux.
